Vocabulary: Fall List #1

YAdumbrate - to foreshadow vaguely; to suggest, discole, or outline partially; overshadow, obscure.
Ex-Adumbrated the principle that which no one owns, no one will care for. 
Apotheosis- the highest point in the development of something; culmination or climax; the elevation of someone to divine status; deification.
Ex- He would be no ordinary king: he would be a savior king, the apotheosis of all kingly, godly qualities.
Ascetic-characterized by or suggesting the practice of severe self-discipline and abstention from all forms of indulgence, typically for religious reasons; a person who practices severe self-discipline and abstention.
Ex-Jacob chose to live an ascetic life because of his strict religious beliefs.
Bauble -A small, showy trinket or decoration.
Ex-I got a bauble at the flee market today. 
Beguile-Charm or enchant (someone), sometimes in a deceptive way; help (time) pass pleasantly.
Ex-To beguile some of the time they went to the movie theater.
Burgeon-To begin to grow or increase rapidly; flourish 
Ex- That apple tree is burgeoning. 
Complement- A thing that completes or brings to perfection. 
Ex- That couple is getting married because they complement each other.
Contumacious -Stubbornly disobedient.
Ex-I'm so contumacious when it comes to listening to my mom. 
Curmudgeon- A person (especially an old man) who is easily annoyed or angered and who often complains.
Ex- Surprisingly  my grandpa is not curmudgeon like other grandparents. 
Didactic -intended to teach, particularly in having moral instruction as an ulterior motive.
Ex- A didactic novel that set out to expose social injustice.
Disingenuous-Not candid or sincere, typically by pretending that one knows less about something than one really does. 
Ex-The detective was a disingenuous man who often played dumb to trick others into confessing.
Exculpate-Show or declare that (someone) is not guilty of wrongdoing.
Ex-Each makes some attempt to exculpate the other.
Faux Pas- Socially awkward or tactless act, especially one that violates accepted social norms, standard customs or the rules of etiquette.
Ex-Unfortunately I made a faux pas, greeting Ashley with the first thing that popped into my mind.
Fulminate-To utter or send out with denunciation; to send forth censures or invectives
ex- I was so fulminated at my brother today. 
Fustian- A strong cotton and linen fabric;high-flown or affected writing or speech; broadly :  anything high-flown or affected in style.
Ex-a speech awash in old-fashioned fustian and bereft of all substance
Hauteur - Arrogance.
Ex- Some people on this planet have such hauteur attitudes. 
Inhibit - to prohibit from doing something.
Ex-You shouldn't allow fear of failure to inhibit you
Jeremiad -A prolonged lamentation or complaint; also :  a cautionary or angry harangue.
Ex- A jeremiad against the political apathy shown by so many young people.
Opportunist -A person who exploits circumstances to gain immediate advantage rather than being guided by consistent principles or plans.
Ex- Some might call me an opportunist. 
Unconscionable-not right or reasonable.
Ex-They have had to endure unconscionable delays.
